Awesome Business as Missions quote

Someone older and wiser told me this today:
"Deuteronomy 8:18 says 'But you shall remember the LORD your God, for it is He who is giving you power to make wealth, that He may confirm His covenant which He swore to your fathers, as it is this day.'

"If God is giving us the power to make wealth, and we're seeing poor people everywhere around us, then what are we doing with what God has given us?"

Amen to that! There too many poor people around. We need to be getting them some jobs like at Del Taco and such.

By the way, can anybody loan me $5 for a snack?

I think it is critical to look back and see the covenantal context of this statement. Yahweh is giving them wealth as a confirmation of His covenant, a covenant whereby he promises to bless both Abraham and the nations. So yes, by making them wealthy God is indeed confirming His promise to bless Abraham; however, by hoarding that blessing they are denying that very covenant by refusing to bless the nations. This has massive missiological implications.

Say what Keith?

Rondell,
Deuteronomy 8:18 says "that He may confirm His covenant which He swore to your fathers" this is speaking of the Abrahamic Covenant (see Genesis 12:1-3). In the Abrahamic Covenant God promises to bless His people part of this blessing would be the wealth mentind in Deuteronomy 8:18. At the same time in the Abrahamic Covenant God also commands His people to be a blessing and to bless the nations. Rather than using this wealth to be a blessing to he nations we see that Israel ultametly failed in their mission bless the nations because they hoarded the blessings for themselves. By massive missiological implications I am arguing that there is much we can learn from this and the way we use our giftings.

Um yeah. Can you put this into English for me? I'm not sure which version of the Bible you using.

All I was saying is that we need to pray for these homeless people to get jobs and such because I'm tired of them shaking they cups of coins in my face. They need to get some manners.
